DOG TRAINING

Dogs are fascinating animals .They are said to have coexisted with human beings as working partners and household pets in all eras and cultures since the days of the cave dwellers. However, no matter their intended purpose, the people they live with want them to behave in a way that makes them pleasant to be around, keeps them safe, and ensure the safety of people and other pets. Dogs do not figure out basic obedience on their own; they must be trained.

Dogs can be trained to become : Assistance dogs , Detection dogs, Herding dogs, Guard dogs, Hunting dogs and Rescue dogs. The basics of any dog training program is obedience. Basic pet obedience training usually consist of toilet habits, response to the handler's call, sitting down, standing up ,lying down and not taking food from strangers

Dog training is a task that requires discipline, consistency, and the patience of the handler. The grueling part of training is communicating with the dog in a humane way that it understands. However, the underlying principle of all communication is simple: Reward desired behavior while consistently correcting undesired behavior

The best time to start training a dog is as early as eight weeks of age. Although the only limitations are stamina, concentration, and physical coordination. As the puppy grows, it forms associations that help form its behavior in later life.

As much as dogs should be petted and cared for, it is important not to allow the dog too much freedom. It gives them the psychological feeling of "shared ownership" which might impede training process. They simply will not obey orders on time or ignore you out rightly.

Correcting a dog should never include harmful physical force or violence. The use of force should not be taken lightly, because even if it ends the behavior, when applied inappropriately, it may lead to a loss of enthusiasm for the given task, stress, and in some cases aggression. A handler may decide to use force. It should however be minimal and inflict the least pain possible. It is important for the dog to know the reason why it is being corrected. Any correction to be made must be within ten minutes of committing the offence. The standard used by most trainers is the minimum amount necessary to inhibit the unwanted behavior.

A handler has to understand communication from the dog. The dog might signal that it is unsure, confused, nervous, happy, excited, and so on. The emotional state of the dog is an important consideration in directing the training, as a dog that is stressed or distracted will not learn efficiently.

Teaching a dog tricks is a very good form of training because it develops relationship between the animal and human and also strengthens the bond between them .It also provides entertainment and engages the dogs mind. This can help to provide relief from problems caused by boredom.

Proper diet, a dry bed, sufficient exercise, affectionate care and regular trips to the vet are necessary to keep a dog a happy and receptive to what it is being taught.
